Gear, training, and sleep techniques for hot-weather performance

Maintaining running consistency as temperatures rise can feel like trying to outrun the sun itself. Our training partner, Greg McMillan, has a free ebook on this subject that we recommend: “Running and Racing in the Heat.” In a recent SMM issue, we shared some other chilling tips on the matter, but that’s just the start of the multifaceted approach you’ll need to stay safe and fit. A full game plan needs gear, training, and sleep changes to help you adapt, starting with Brian Metzler’s: “Cool Running Gear: 6 Things We Love and Recommend.” We should note that “cool” is a double entendre here, since the Tifosi sunglasses, Bambū Werx Performance Socks, Freaks of Nature sunscreen, and On Lightweight Cap are exactly the tools you need to stay chill on the go. Once you’re properly equipped, we suggest learning from the pros who’ve taken on the toughest summer-ultra challenges: “How Western States Runners Will Beat The Heat: 11 Science-Backed Cooling Strategies.” The writeup from Amby Burfoot highlights some classic tricks, like the cold water dump over your head, and newer innovations, like ice bandanas that cool the neck with impressive efficiency (grab one for free from The Feed with a cart of $65 or more). Finally, the heat doesn’t stop when your run does, which is why you should check out this post from our Sleep Partner Lagoon: “Is Your Bedroom Too Hot to Sleep?” In case you didn’t know, our bodies need to drop a few degrees in order to fall asleep, and if your bedroom is too hot to allow this, you could remain stuck in a state of alertness. Ryan offers a few easy but effective tips, like taking a hot shower (which moves blood to your extremities and drops your core temp) or choosing temperature-regulating fabrics like silk for your sheets and pillowcases.
