Researchers found smarter ways to improve cholesterol

Ever feel like the advice on cholesterol is scrambled? One minute eggs are the villain, the next they’re not so bad. Well, according to “The truth about cholesterol: 12 things you need to know – from eggs to weight to statins,” for most of us, the dietary cholesterol found in eggs actually has only a minimal impact on our blood cholesterol levels. That’s a bit of a hot take, given the long-standing nature of the debate, and it’s a topic you should discuss with your doctor before making any changes to your diet. However, while you might be cracking open that extra omelet with a bit more confidence, it’s worth noting that managing cholesterol is a multifaceted issue. Some folks use a medication called statins to reduce their cholesterol levels, and research has just uncovered a way to increase their efficacy: “Thousands of lives could be saved by combining two cholesterol-lowering drugs, study suggests.” A meta-analysis from the Mayo Clinic found that for many individuals, combining statins with a drug called ezetimibe lowered the risk of deaths from cardiovascular causes by 16%. It also reduced your odds of an adverse cardiovascular event or stroke by 18% and 17%, respectively. Many of our readers and running buddies brush off heart health advice since they believe their cardio work provides immunity. That’s true to an extent, but heart disease is often traced to an unlucky gene pool that can affect even the most avid marathoner. As we mentioned in our last issue, heart disease is also the #1 cause of death in the United States.
