Altra’s Experience Flow 3 Serves Up a Natural Ride for Everyone

Altra Experience Flow 3

Altra’s new Experience Flow 3 shoe is a game-changer for runners seeking a more natural ride.

If you haven’t run in an Altra running shoe lately—specifically a road running shoe—you might be surprised to know that the brand has gone through quite a transformation over the past couple of years.

Founded in 2010 based on road and trail shoes built with a wider toe box and a level platform—aka, a zero-drop geometry from heel to toe—it gained a big following among runners seeking what many call an unencumbered, natural ride. Its shoes were a stark contrast to the prevailing narrow forefoot shape and built-up heel common to most road shoes at the time.

Altra continued to grow primarily via the natural ride characteristics of its shoes, even after acquisition by two larger parent companies—the latest by VF Corporation in 2018. But as much as Altra’s unique design ethos was its biggest selling point, it also became its biggest limiting factor, too. Simply put, if a runner wasn’t accustomed (or couldn’t easily adapt) to running on a level platform with a wider toe box, that runner was probably going to opt to buy a shoe from another brand.

Altra tried to adapt by nixing the “zero-drop” terminology from its website and point-of-sale content and also by creating various width profiles for certain shoes in its line. Those made good sense, but to truly grow the brand at scale, it finally began offering shoes with low heel-toe drop geometries in 2023 with a shoe called the AltraFWDExperience. It was, in essence, meant to be a gateway shoe that offered an entryway to the Altra brand that eliminated what might have been for many runners the nonstarter to the zero-drop platform.

Fast-forward to the present day, and Altra has evolved that concept with great success with the release of the Altra Experience Flow 3, a versatile, smooth-riding everyday trainer with a 4mm heel-toe offset and a responsive sub-maximal midsole cushioning. This Experience Flow line, and especially this shoe, offers a more inclusive entryway to running with a natural stride without being excessively minimalist or having a zero-drop design.

After running about 60 miles in it, I think it’s my favorite Altra road shoe ever. Whether you consider it a shoe for transitioning to a zero-drop shoe or, more likely (like me), that it becomes the most minimal, natural-riding shoe in your quiver is up to you.

What’s New: The biggest changes to the Experience Flow 3 are an updated engineered mesh upper for added breathability and a redesigned heel collar for enhanced comfort. It still offers natural ride characteristics—namely a slightly wider “FootShape” toe box and a rockered profile—but the real juice of this shoe comes from semi-soft and pleasantly responsive EGO P35 midsole.

Heel-Toe Offset: 4mm; 32mm (heel), 28mm (forefoot)

Fit/Feel/Ride: The Experience Flow 3 fits true to size with a medium-volume interior and still feels like an Altra shoe, with a solid locked-down feeling in the heel and midsole and a more spacious area in the forefoot. The step-in feel is comfortable, but not excessively plush. However, the fully gusseted medium-padded tongue creates a really nice bootie construction and cohesive connectivity that contributes to the shoe’s extremely smooth, natural ride.

The ride feels so good because of the midsole—not only because it offers the right amount of softness and bounce, but also because it’s lower to the ground. A 32mm heel stack height might seem very low for today’s standards, and it is, but something about it feels just right as you roll through from heel to toe in this shoe.

And here’s a key point: don’t let looks be deceiving. The Altra Experience Flow 3 looks chunkier than it is with the way the foam midsole cradle wraps up along the medial and lateral sidewalls, but it belies the lower interior height and proprioceptive connection to the ground you’ll feel in every stride.

Why It’s Great: More than any Altra road shoe I’ve run in—and I’ve run in most of their models since 2010—this one is the most sublime, with uninhibited, buttery smooth transitions from heel strike to toe off. Admittedly, I haven’t run in zero-drop shoes consistently, so it’s not that I think running in this shoe will help me transition in that direction.

It’s actually more of the opposite scenario: I have found that I too often have been running in excessively cushioned, high-off-the-ground shoes with 5mm to 8mm heel-toe offsets, and in doing so, I have lost touch with how good it feels to run in a shoe with exceptional proprioceptive “feel” for the ground. If nothing else, this shoe invigorated my running by renewing that connective sensation and how it made me feel in control of every stride.

Why You’ll Love It: The EGO P35 midsole exquisitely blends shock-absorbing cushioning and responsive bounciness. And because it’s not excessively thick and wobbly, it is extremely stable, and that gives a runner great stride control. I also found that the lower-to-the-ground design added to the shoe’s versatility, allowing it to be great for both slightly longer runs and quicker-paced tempo efforts. I really enjoyed running spontaneous fartlek-like repeats (3 mins on, 3 mins off) and also did a fun session of 1K repeats on the track.

Why You Might Not Like It: If you’re used to thicker, more maximally cushioned shoes, this one might take a while to become your shoe of choice for your weekend long runs during your marathon buildup. The longest I have run in it so far is 9 miles, and it felt great, but I did come away with some second-day fatigue and soreness. Not because of any negative factor of the shoe’s design, but more because I haven’t been used to running in shoes with a 32/28 profile very much lately. That said, if you have good lower-length strength and are used to running in shoes that aren’t quite so foamy, you’ll be fine.

Pros: The Experience Flow 3 has all the elements of a very good everyday trainer in just the right amount. The thickness of the midsole provides sufficient cushioning and the smartly placed segments of outsole rubber provide effective traction while helping limit the overall weight of the shoe. And, while aesthetics don’t contribute to fit, feel, or performance, I think this is one of the best-looking shoes Altra has ever made. The awkward color motifs and often bulbous shapes are a thing of the past. This shoe looks good, and there is something to be said about looking good can contribute to feeling good out on a run, right?

Cons: If you really like maximal cushioning in your running shoes, this one will likely feel a bit sparse and too close to the ground. And if you’re used to Altra’s zero-drop models, you might take umbrage at this shoe. The 4mm offset from heel to toe is still relatively minor, but it could be enough to disrupt what you already appreciate in a zero-drop geometry.
