Is Google’s new WHOOP competitor worth it?

We’re big fans of just about everything WHOOP has to offer – with the exception of the annual subscription fee. While we appreciate capitalism and admire WHOOP’s $10 billion valuation, a little company called Google is entering the arms (wrist?) race. Google teamed up with FitBit to create a screenless tracker of their own, which you can learn about in this new story: “Which Fitness Band Is Better: Fitbit Air vs. Whoop.” The Google Air costs $99 upfront and functions without a mandatory subscription, offering basic metrics like activity tracking, sleep stages, resting heart rate, and cardio load. To unlock the AI Google Health Coach for workout planning and meal analysis, you need a $9.99 monthly Premium subscription. While this setup is cheaper than Whoop’s $239 annual fee, reviewers note that Fitbit’s AI coach still has some bugs and hallucinations to work out before it’s ready for primetime. Testers said WHOOP’s app provided better data, strength training tracking, and habit analysis – connecting behaviors like taking a multivitamin to the impact on your recovery. The Air hardware is smaller and lighter with adjustable velcro bands, though its heart rate tracking occasionally drops during intervals compared to WHOOP’s consistency. While the Air provides a cleaner interface and avoids WHOOP’s required subscription, this YouTube review, “The Truth About the ‘Whoop Killer’,” notes that Google’s broader strategy involves collecting your health data, meaning the cost could be your privacy instead of your money. Highly dedicated athletes may prefer WHOOP’s granular recovery insights, but if you want core tracking without the mandatory recurring fee, the Air could be a sensible alternative.
