The New Balance 860v15 is a Stable, Smooth-Riding Everyday Cruiser

New Balance 860v15

One of the best things about modern running shoes is how much stability models have evolved. The days of dense, intrusive medial posts forcing your foot into a “corrected” position are gone, replaced by smarter, more nuanced technologies that work with your natural gait instead of against it. Today’s designs use geometry, dual-density foams, and embedded plates to subtly guide your stride—providing just enough support to keep your gait in check without over-controlling it.

The just-released New Balance 860v15 refines this philosophy further, pairing a dual-layer Fresh Foam X midsole with an upgraded stability chassis with a reduced 6mm heel-to-toe drop that encourages a more natural foot strike while delivering the brand’s most cushioned 860 experience yet.

For runners who overpronate or simply want a reliable, high-mileage daily trainer, the 860v15 strikes a rare balance—offering genuine stability and plush protection without the stiff, restrictive feel that has historically made stability shoes feel like a compromise. The result is a shoe that has grown with its loyal fan base, graduating from a straightforward motion-control tool into a sophisticated, smooth-riding everyday trainer that serious runners can confidently reach for day after day.

What’s New: The 860v15 features a reduced 6mm heel-to-toe drop and a refined, denser cushion platform that transforms the ride from a traditional stability shoe into one that naturally guides your feet without feeling restrictive. At its core, a dual-layer Fresh Foam X midsole pairs a plush upper layer with a firmer medial lower layer, sandwiching an EVA Stability Plane that steers your foot’s roll pattern by bringing the ground up to meet your natural position rather than forcing a correction. A gentle rocker profile ties it all together, promoting smooth, efficient heel-to-toe transitions with every stride.

Fit/Feel/Ride: The 860v15 fits true to size with a roomy forefoot for natural toe splay, and the engineered mesh upper conforms to a wide range of foot shapes, plus it is available in four widths (Narrow, Standard, Wide, and X-Wide) to accommodate nearly every foot shape. A padded heel counter and elevated sidewalls work together to create a secure, locked-in and comfortable feel through the heel and midfoot without sacrificing comfort.

The 860v15 delivers a smooth, controlled ride defined by a gentle rocker profile that creates an effortless rolling sensation from heel to toe, reducing the effort needed with each push-off. The dual-layer Fresh Foam X midsole provides plush, protective cushioning that absorbs impact without ever feeling sloppy, thanks to the firmer medial layer and Stability Plane keeping everything grounded and purposeful.

Impressively, the cushioning holds up well over long distances, staying consistent and comfortable through high-mileage weeks and marathon training without packing out or turning harsh. It’s limited in what it can do—it’s not very capable of running faster paces—but it’s ideal for Zone 1 to Zone 3 running.

Why It’s Great: The New Balance 860v15 offers exceptional stability and motion control, making it ideal if you tend to overpronate or want extra support during long runs. The 860v15 uses a Stability Plane system that keeps your stride aligned without the old-school, stiff medial posts. That means you get guidance and support—but it still feels natural and smooth. If your gait overpronates or you need lower-leg support as you fatigue later in a run, the 860v15 will help guide your strides without inhibiting your movement. It’s the kind of shoe you can grab day after day without thinking twice—reliable, predictable, and durable.

Why You’ll Love It: Its ABZORB cushioning and Fresh Foam midsole deliver a plush, comfortable ride that reduces fatigue whether you’re logging daily miles or standing on your feet all day. It’s not overly squishy or unstable—it strikes a nice balance between comfort and structure, which is why it works so well for high mileage. I loved it for moderately paced midweek runs, but its limitations became evident on my longer runs. I ran 10+ miles in it twice and it felt serviceable and surprisingly responsive, even if not springy or propulsive.

Why You Might Not Like It: The New Balance 860v15 is a heavier and stiffer shoe than most models, and it can feel sluggish if you prefer a lightweight, responsive ride for up-tempo running. The high level of stability may feel overly restrictive and uncomfortable if you have a neutral gait or naturally high arches that don’t require that kind of correction. Additionally, the bulkier silhouette and utilitarian design may not appeal to you if you prioritize sleek, fashion-forward sneaker aesthetics over pure performance function.

Pros: The Fresh Foam X midsole provides soft, protective cushioning without feeling overly intrusive. Having the option to choose between several different width options is key, plus it is available in a wide range of color motifs, too.

Cons: It’s still a stability shoe, which means it’s a bit heavier, stiffer and more structured than any neutral training shoe on the market.
