Expert training and fueling tips from Kate Aseltine

How does a female bodybuilder and powerlifter manage to jump into a 100-mile race without even a normal marathon on her resume? We really enjoyed learning the answer to that question during our recent conversation with Kate Aseltine on the SMM Podcast which you can listen to on Spotify or Apple Podcasts. Kate is the Creative Marketing Director at NativePath and she explained how she relied on workouts up to 50-miles long and weight training to maintain bone density while prepping for a Last Man Standing event. Runners of any distance can learn from her undertaking alongside the advice found in “The Ultramarathon Survival Guide.”  The guide notes that most runners taper too much, which can leave you feeling stale, and suggests cutting volume by just 25 percent in the final weeks while maintaining intensity. It also emphasizes practicing positive psychology to embrace fatigue – universally applicable strategies whether you are racing a 5K or 100 miles. Back on the podcast, Kate explained how NativePath prioritizes natural, ethical sourcing for their targeted supplements, and she shared a surprisingly simple fueling snack: white rice and honey. She’s not the only one replacing artificial sweeteners with a natural alternative, according to: “This natural sweetener could power your workout.” Honey contains both glucose and fructose, which absorb through different gut pathways simultaneously to deliver rapid energy with potentially less digestive strain. A single tablespoon provides around 20 grams of carbohydrates, comparable to a commercial gel. Research indicates it can also aid recovery, with runners in one preliminary study covering 10 percent more distance in a second trial after consuming it. (That research only tested 10 recreational runners, so it’s far from decisive.) That being said, we’re hearing lots of good things about honey as an on-the-go energy source, so consider trying some for a low-cost, natural alternative to your usual gel to keep your engine running smoothly.
