The FDA may soon lift its ban on injectable peptides

If you’ve spent any time in online fitness circles lately, you’ve probably heard someone mention peptides. If you are wondering whether you’re missing out or dodging a bullet, the answer is somewhere in the middle. And like most things in America these days, it’s gotten political according to the NYT: “Heeding Kennedy’s Wishes, F.D.A. Is Expected to Lift Restriction on Peptides.” The FDA is moving toward allowing compounding pharmacies to produce more than a dozen injectable peptides that were effectively banned in 2023 over safety concerns. Proponents of peptide use have argued that current restrictions have created a dangerous black market where consumers are purchasing research-grade or overseas-sourced products with no quality guarantees. For more on that, you can read this story: “The Wellness World Is Eager for RFK Jr.’s Promised Move on Peptides.” Experts warn that right now, patients are almost certainly getting illicit or unproven products from disreputable sources. The proposed change could bring these compounds into regulated channels – but, importantly, it would not make them FDA-approved. The evidence base for most peptides still comes largely from animal studies and small human trials, and experts like Dr. Eric Topol have flagged the data as thin. On the other hand, endocrinologist Dr. Edwin Lee points to compounds like BPC-157 and thymosin alpha-1 as showing genuine regenerative and recovery potential.
