The On Cloudsurfer 3 is a plush, smooth-rolling, do-almost-everything daily trainer that finally delivers the comfort the Cloudsurfer line has been promising.
Every brand has one shoe that’s supposed to do the heavy lifting, the one you lace up five days out of seven without thinking about it. For On, that shoe is the Cloudsurfer, and with the third version it finally earns the job.
For me, it seemed like the Cloudsurfer 2 lost the plot. It went firmer and flatter, and a shoe built around comfort stopped feeling very comfortable, especially deep into a long run. The Cloudsurfer 2 was a fine shoe in the way a lot of daily trainers are fine: reliable, a little bland and too firm for its own good. A cushioned workhorse shouldn’t feel like a compromise. So when the third version showed up, I figured it’d be a tweak and a new colorway.
But in reality, the Cloudsurfer 3 is, in essence, a brand new shoe. It course-corrects considerably with Surreal, a new supercritical EVA-based foam making its debut here, riding inside a reworked Cloudtec Phase platform. It’s a maximally cushioned shoe that has one of the plushest interiors and smoothest rides of any shoe I’ve run in this year. And no, it isn’t marshmallowly mush. It’s firmer, more energetic and more stable than that, which is a big part of why it works.
After running about 45 miles over the previous month in it—including long runs, easy runs, recovery runs and tempo runs—I think it’s one of my favorite On shoes ever. Also, it was one of the last shoes I logged a bunch of miles in before I took a break for a minor knee surgery. But now that arthroscopic procedure is behind me, it’s one of the first shoes I am eager to lace up once I get back to running in another week or so.

What’s New: The Cloudsurfer 3 is technically an update, but it’s such a big overall that if feels like a brand new shoe. The biggest change is underfoot. The Cloudsurfer 3 introduces Surreal, a new supercritical EVA-based foam housed inside On’s signature Cloudtec Phase structure. Up top, a warp-knit upper gets a heavily padded collar and tongue that give the shoe a plush, almost luxurious feel. This version also has a wider base and study heel clip for added rear-foot support.
Fit/Feel/Ride: The Cloudsurfer 3 fits true to size with a medium interior volume and a relatively snug and narrow toe box. The interior is the first thing you notice. The upper is soft and smart-fitting, and the padded collar and tongue wrap the foot without any hot spots or irritation points. Underfoot, the ride is soft-ish, responsive-ish and smooth-rolling. For a supercritical EVA-based foam, Surreal runs firmer than I expected, and that firmness is doing real work by keeping the ride from going dead through the stride. It’s also stable enough that I’d have guessed it was a stability shoe if you hadn’t told me otherwise. Despite the extra weight, the shoe still turns over at uptempo paces.
Why It’s Great: What makes the Cloudsurfer 3 great is the comfort, starting with that plush interior. The upper stays secure without any challenging aspects, and the cushioning is soft without sliding into marshmallow mush. It handles long runs, tempo efforts and easy or recovery days equally well, which is a rare range for a high-mileage shoe. My longest run in it so far has been 9.5 miles, but I felt like I could have gone more without any issues. I ramped up to tempo pace on numerous occasional but it didn’t feel like it wanted to go faster than that. I liked it for longer workouts (like 3 x 3 miles fast) but not shorter intervals (like mile repeats).
Why You’ll Love It: You’ll probably love it for the smooth-riding midsole. Surreal is soft-ish but never sloppy. It’s firmer and more energetic than I expected, and it’s stable enough that I’d have pegged this as a stability shoe if no one had told me otherwise. Add a plush, padded upper that wraps the foot like a favorite pair of slippers, and you get a shoe that feels good the moment you step in.
The shoe rolls through each stride steadily, so the miles pass without it calling attention to itself, and that makes it a natural quiver anchor you can reach for most days. It should appeal to a wide range of runners, from newer folks who want a forgiving daily trainer to veterans who want one dependable shoe for the bulk of their mileage.

Why You Might Not Like It: The main drawback is that the Cloudsurfer 3 doesn’t offer a locked-down fit. The upper is plush and secure, but it isn’t snug or precise, so if you like a dialed-in, glove-like hold, especially for faster running, this one may feel a little relaxed. I noticed that most while cornering and accelerating at high speeds.
Pros: The Cloudsurfer 3 has a plush, irritation-free interior and well-balanced cushioning that’s soft-ish, responsive-ish and smooth-rolling. It’s surprisingly stable and versatile enough to cover long, tempo and easy or recovery runs, and it’s a huge upgrade over the Cloudsurfer 2.
Cons: The two biggest drawbacks are that fit might be too plush for its own good (it feels comfortable but vague, not locked down) and it’s not as light as other everyday trainers with similar stack heights.
