Should you be going green in your workouts?

Going green has taken on a whole new meaning in fitness circles, and we’re not talking about kale smoothies. Exercising in natural environments exposes you to fresh air and sunlight, and according to “Why “Green Exercise” Belongs in Your Routine Twice a Month,” moving through green or blue spaces can effectively boost your mood, self-esteem, and cognitive function. The article points out that outdoor environments also introduce a unique set of physical variables. Braving uneven terrain, wind resistance, and elevation changes helps increase functional mobility, which may lead to a healthier heart and more robust bones over time. We recently discussed the psychological side of these natural variables on the SMM Podcast with Darcy Piceu – Ultrarunner and Therapist (which you can listen to on Spotify or Apple Podcasts). In our conversation, Darcy noted she will actually conduct therapy sessions out on the trail, leaning on the therapeutic value of outdoor exercise to improve both mental and physical health. She highlighted how moving through nature encourages mindfulness and helps us stay present in the moment, rather than fixating on sources of stress. If your current training block feels stagnant, consider relocating a session to a local state park or coastal path to experience the restorative effects of a dynamic surface and a better view.
